Ingredients
  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • ½ teaspoon thyme
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon oregano
  • ½ teaspoon basil
  • 4 tablespoons paprika
  • 3 tablespoons MSG
  • 1 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1 tablespoon dry mustard
  • 1 tablespoon black pepper
  • 2 teaspoons garlic salt
  • 1 tablespoon celery salt
  • 8 chicken pieces
  • 2 beaten eggs
  • 1 cup dry, unseasoned breadcrumbs
  • 6 - 8 cups shortening
Instructions
  1. Pre heat oil in deep fryer to 350° F.
  2. Mix all the ingredients except the shortening, breadcrumbs, eggs, and chicken in a large bowl.
  3. Dip the chicken pieces in the egg and then turn them over in the breadcrumbs.
  4. Roll them in the spicy flour mixture.
  5. Heat the shortening to 350 degrees F in a deep fryer and drop the chicken pieces in, one at a time with tongs careful not to splash hot oil.
  6. Fry the chicken for 12 to 15 minutes, until it is golden brown and cooked through.
  7. Drain on racks for 5 minutes.

  • I read a lot of the comments about the recipe. I haven’t try it yet but going to sound very good.

  • Old man Sanders was as tight as the bark on a tree. A genuine skinflint. There is no way I can see him putting all those ingredients in his fried chicken.
    However, I do think he had a secret ingredient or possibly two that blended perfectly with the condiments black pepper and salt. I wish to God I could come up with it.
    If you remember the taste of the old original recipe used while he was still living, it had no onion or garlic flavor PERIOD. There was that unique standout taste like non other. It would have been one or two inexpensive common spice(s) because as I said he would not buy and expensive spice like saffron.
    Todays KFC is nowhere near the way it used to taste. I have mixed every combination I can think of to no avail.
    There are certain flavors that have never escaped my taste. Dr Pepper tastes the same as it always did. Agreed? KFC is way off and has been for years.
    I do recall being told by a cousin of Sanders who used to drive him to the locations for inspection that Sexton Commercial Foods Company mixed and bagged his recipe after his company grew but he didn’t have a clue as to what was in it. it was never discussed lest Sanders would become infuriated.
